As per reports, multiple adverse weather conditions are forecast across several US regions as of Tuesday (02 December)
• On Tuesday (02 December), the first major winter storm of the season is forecast to impact inland New England and the Mid-Atlantic region, bringing widespread snowfall, freezing rainfall, and cold temperatures through Thursday (04 December).
• The storm system is forecast to develop as a moist Gulf air mass interacts with a frontal boundary across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, leading to widespread rainfall across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Southeast on Tuesday (02 December). Rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast along coastal regions including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, while inland areas such as Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia are likely to experience snowfall and freezing rainfall.
• A coastal low-pressure system is expected to intensify along the Mid-Atlantic coast, enhancing moist air inflow into colder inland regions. This will likely increase snowfall and freezing rainfall across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, especially during the day on Tuesday (02 December).
• Heavy snowfall has been forecast for interior New England, including western Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, as well as parts of northern Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Snowfall rates could reach one inch per hour, resulting in total accumulations of five to 10 inches, and in some areas, totals could exceed 12 inches.
• Freezing rainfall is forecast to affect the central and southern Appalachians, including West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky, with potential ice accretions of 0.1 to 0.2 inches.
• Snowfall is forecast across the northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Rocky Mountains, affecting areas such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado, and Wyoming, where light to moderate snowfall is expected to continue from Tuesday (02 December) through Thursday (04 December).
• The Colorado Front Range, including Denver and Colorado Springs, may see moderate snowfall due to moist air from the Gulf interacting with cold mountain air. The Great Basin, including Utah and Nevada, is forecast to experience mountain snow accumulation as the system moves southward.
• A clipper system moving through the Dakotas and Minnesota on Tuesday (02 December) is forecast to bring light snowfall before reaching the Great Lakes region on Wednesday (03 December). Lake-enhanced snowfall is forecast downwind of Lakes Erie, Huron, and Ontario, producing moderate accumulations in Buffalo (New York), Cleveland (Ohio), and nearby areas.
• In the southern US, rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast along portions of the central and western Gulf Coast, including Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, by Wednesday (03 December) afternoon and Thursday (04 December) morning, with possible localised heavy rainfall.
• Cold temperatures are forecast to persist across the eastern and central US. Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to remain in the 20 degrees Fahrenheit to 30 degrees Fahrenheit range for the Midwest and New England, including Chicago (Illinois), Detroit (Michigan), Boston (Massachusetts), and Burlington (Vermont); between 30 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 degrees Fahrenheit for the Mid-Atlantic, including Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Baltimore (Maryland), and Washington D.C.; and between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for the Southeast, including Atlanta (Georgia), Birmingham (Alabama), and Charlotte (North Carolina).
