As per reports, on Saturday (12 April), a special bench of Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad in the wake of violence in the district during the protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act that have resulted in three deaths so far. Apart from nearly 300 Border Security Force personnel locally available in Murshidabad, additional five Companies have been deployed at the request of the state government.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan held a video conference with Chief Secretary and DGP of West Bengal. The DGP briefed the Secretary that the situation was tense but under control and was being monitored closely.
• Bengal Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee has declared that her state would not implement the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The CM has appealed for peace and harmony, underlining that the law was enacted by the central government. CM Banerjee cautioned against political misuse of religion and warned of legal action against those inciting riots.
• Violence was reported on Saturday (12 April) in Murshidabad district where one person sustained a bullet injury in Dhulian, Samserganj block. More than 110 people were arrested in connection with the violence. Around 70 people have been arrested from Stuti and another from Samserganj. Raids are continuing across all affected districts to arrest those who are involved in the violence.
• As of Saturday (12 April) evening, senior police officials conducted area domination exercises, and the situation is reported to be under control but tense. Patrolling continues, and authorities are urging people to ignore social media rumors.
