As per reports, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar arrived in Kolkata on Thursday (17 April) evening to lead an inquiry into the recent violence in Murshidabad following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. NCM Chairperson Rahatkar will visit affected areas, including Malda and Murshidabad, over the next three days.

Meanwhile, a team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is set to visit a refugee camp in Malda on Friday (18 April). On Thursday (17 April), the Calcutta High Court stated that central forces will remain in Murshidabad for some time to maintain law and order and said that the court will monitor the restoration and rehabilitation of victims. The court also ordered officials from the BJP, TMC, and others not to make provocative speeches that could escalate tensions.

• The West Bengal police stated on Thursday (17 April) that 60 FIRs have been lodged in connection with the violence in Murshidabad district and the number of arrests has climbed to 274.
• Additional Director General of Police (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar said that a special investigation team has been formed under the leadership of Syed Waquar Raza, DIG of the Murshidabad range.
• According to West Bengal police, 70 percent of the shops in violence prone areas have opened, and 85 people have already returned home.
