As per reports, Sharif Osman Hadi’s funeral prayer is scheduled to take place at 1400 hours (local time) on Saturday (20 December) at the Parliament’s South Plaza. A day of state mourning is being observed on Saturday (20 December).
• Hadi will be buried next to the country’s national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on Saturday (20 December) near the Dhaka University Central Mosque. A funeral prayer will be held after Zuhr (mid-day prayer) at Manik Mia Avenue.
• Ahead of funeral proceedings, flying drones in the Parliament House and surrounding areas has been completely prohibited. Funeral attendees have also been requested to not carry any bags or heavy items.
• Traffic will remain restricted along the Manik Mia Avenue on Saturday (20 December). Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) stated that vehicular movement on Manik Mia Avenue will be restricted from morning until the completion of the janaza (funeral procession) and burial. Vehicles will not be allowed to ply from Khejur Bagan crossing to Manik Mia Avenue during the funeral. The restriction aims to facilitate the smooth conduct of the janaza and manage the expected influx of mourners.
• DMP urged city residents and all drivers to avoid the Manik Mia Avenue area during this period and use alternative routes instead. Several alternative routes have been suggested, covering Mirpur Road, Farmgate, Dhanmondi 27, Asadgate, Lake Road, Bijoy Sarani, and the elevated expressway, depending on commuters’ destinations. DMP also requested vehicles using the elevated expressway to avoid the Farmgate exit ramp during the janaza and instead use the FDC (Hatirjheel) ramp to reduce congestion around the venue.
• The Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a programme wherein it called upon its district and metropolitan units across the country to organise special prayer programmes on Saturday (20 December), seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Hadi. A central prayer programme will be held on Sunday (21 December) at 1000 hours (local time) at the Al-Falah Auditorium in the capital’s Mogbazar area under the initiative of the central organisation.
