Update on Typhoon Bavi in China – Friday (10 July)

According to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Typhoon Bavi weakened from a super typhoon to a severe typhoon on Friday (10 July) but continues to move northwest toward the coast between Fujian and Zhejiang provinces.

The storm is expected to make landfall on the evening hours (local time) of Saturday (11 July), bringing widespread heavy rainfall, typhoon-force winds, and an elevated risk of flooding, landslides, and transport disruptions across eastern, northern, and northeastern China.

• As of 0500 hours (local time) on Friday (10 July), Typhoon Bavi’s center was located approximately 830 kilometers southeast of Keelung, Taiwan, with maximum sustained winds of 45 meters per second and a minimum central pressure of 945 hPa. The storm is moving northwest at 15 to 20 kilometers per hour.
• Bavi is forecast to make landfall between Fuqing in Fujian Province and Wenling in Zhejiang Province on the evening hours of Saturday (11 July) as a strong typhoon or typhoon before gradually weakening as it moves inland.
• The CMA issued an Orange Typhoon Warning, along with a Yellow Rainstorm Warning and a Blue Severe Convective Weather Warning, as widespread heavy to torrential rainfall is expected across Taiwan, Zhejiang, Fujian, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Northeast China, and parts of Northwest China through Sunday (12 July).
• Rainfall totals of 500 to 600 millimeters are forecast over southeastern Zhejiang and northeastern Fujian. Localized rainfall of 300 to 350 millimeters is also forecast in northeastern Beijing and northeastern Hebei.
• Gale-force winds are expected across the East China Sea, coastal Zhejiang, Fujian, Shanghai, and surrounding waters. Winds near the typhoon’s center could reach Force 12-14, with gusts of Force 15-16, posing significant risks to maritime activities.
