According to reports, latest updates on Tropical Storm Gaemi and its impact after making landfall in China, as of Wednesday (31 July) are as follows:
• As of 1000 hours on Wednesday (31 July), China’s National Meteorological Centre has renewed an orange alert, the second highest in its four-tier warning system, for torrential rainfall resulting in casualties and triggering dike breaches and emergency evacuations.
• As of Wednesday (31 July), heavy rainfall is expected in 11 provincial-level regions, including Hebei and Liaoning provinces, as well as Beijing and Tianjin.
• The accumulated precipitation in some areas may reach 100mm to 200mm while heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gales in some locations is forecast, with maximum hourly precipitation of more than 80mm.
• At least seven people have been confirmed dead and three others remain missing after intense rain triggered flash floods and mudflows in central China’s Hunan Province, as of Tuesday (30 July).
• Heavy rainstorms in the aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi have impacted regions across Hunan including Yongxing County in the city of Chenzhou, city of Zixing and Xiangtan County, where three dike breaches occurred in the Juanshui River in the past few days, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents.
• In Zixing, the rainfall has toppled and damaged around 867 households and caused 1,345 road cave-ins. The city has dispatched more than 5,400 rescuers, while a total of 11,379 people have been evacuated for safety as per the city’s flood control and drought relief headquarters.
• China’s National Meteorological Centre has forecast that from 1400 on Wednesday (31 July) to 1400 on Thursday (01 August), parts of central and eastern Heilongjiang, central Jilin, central and northern Liaoning, eastern Inner Mongolia, southern Yunnan, and southern Guangxi will have heavy to torrential rainfall, of which parts of southern Heilongjiang, northern Jilin, and southern Guangxi will have torrential rainfall (100-180 mm).
