According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), Typhoon Gaemi was downgraded to a tropical storm on Thursday evening (25 July) and was forecast to make landfall in China later that day. Following are the latest updates;

• As of 0830 hours on Friday (26 July), Tropical Storm Gaemi has recorded movement for next 24hrs for NW (northwest) turning NNW 17 km/hr with minimum surface pressure of 988 hPa. Maximum sustained winds near centre are 20 meter per second with gusts recorded to be 28 meter per second; https://www.cwa.gov.tw/eng/
• Seven cities and counties in central and southern Taiwan have announced school and office closures for the third consecutive day on Friday (26 July) as they brace for torrential rain brought by storm Gaemi. Authorities in Yunlin and Nantou counties in central Taiwan as well as Chiayi City/County, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung County in southern Taiwan announced that they will call off work and classes.
• Kinmen County also announced suspension of schools and offices for another day, while Lienchiang County decided to suspend work and close schools for Friday morning but not Friday afternoon. Certain areas of Hsinchu, Yilan and Hualien counties as well as Heping District in Taichung announced school and/or office closures in their localities. • Widespread flooding was reported across Taiwan, with several areas of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan, including Renwu, Gushan, Fongshan, Cianjin and Dashe districts, experiencing flood conditions. According to CWA, Duonalindao area in Kaohisung’s Maolin District had recorded 1,204.5 millimeters (mm) of accumulated rainfall, the highest among any weather station in Taiwan, followed by Fenqihu village in Chiayi County’s Zhuqi Township, with 1,020.5 mm of accumulated rainfall, as of 2110 hours on Thursday (25 July).
• Five deaths have been reported so far. The highest number of injuries was reported in Kaohsiung (174), followed by 66 in Tainan and 53 in Hualien County.
• Over 11,000 households were without water and 64,000 still had no electricity across Taiwan as of 1700 hours on Thursday (15 July) according to Taiwan Water Corporation (TWC) and Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower). The households still without electricity during publish time were mainly located in southern Taiwan, with 28,056 in Kaohsiung, as well as more than 7,000 each in Pingtung and Chiayi Counties, according to Taipower.
• More than 92 percent of the 783,598 households that lost power during Typhoon Gaemi had electricity restored by Thursday evening (25 July). Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) mobilized over 6,000 personnel to restore power but faced challenges from landslides, fallen trees, and widespread flooding, especially in Kaohsiung. As of 2000 hours on Thursday (25 July) 60,581 households remain without power, including 15,676 in Kaohsiung, 12,102 in Yunlin, 7,453 in Chiayi, and 6,571 in Changhua.
• Flooding in Kaohsiung has damaged underground electrical equipment in many buildings. Taipower dispatched water pumps from southern cities and districts to expedite the removal of water and facilitate repair work.
• Heavy rainfall was expected in central and southern Taiwan until Friday morning (26 July) as the remnants of Tropical Storm Gaemi continue to affect the country. Additionally, an orange warning has been issued for Taichung City Mountain Area, Nantou County Mountain Area, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, Hengchun Peninsula, Penghu County and a yellow warning for Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Hualien County Mountain Area, Taitung County, Lanyu and Ludao Islands, Kinmen Area, Matsu Area till Friday night (26 July). • A yellow strong wind advisory is also in effect from Friday morning to Saturday morning (26-27 July) for Keelung North Coast, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Yilan County, Hualien County, Taitung County, Lanyu and Ludao Islands, Penghu County, Kinmen Area and Matsu Area.
