The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) of Australia has categorised Tropical Cyclone Megan as a Category three system, slowly moving towards the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. It has sustained winds near the centre of 130 km/h with wind gusts upto 185 km/h.

• Megan is most likely to make landfall on Monday (18 March) morning. Northern Territory residents living near the Gulf of Carpentaria are being warned to make safety preparations as they are expected to be heavily impacted.
• Damaging wind gusts upto 110km/h are currently being experienced over parts of Groote Eylandt, these are expected to begin to ease during Monday (18 March) morning. Similar conditions are occurring about the Sir Edward Pellew Group and the adjacent mainland areas including Bing Bong and Port McArthur. These gales are expected to extend to further coastal mainland areas between Nathan River and the NT/Queensland border and to inland areas including Borroloola, McArthur River Mine, and Robinson River overnight and continue during Monday (19 March) morning.
• Once over land, Megan is forecast to weaken during Tuesday (19 March) and move west across the Northern Territory as a tropical low.
• Heavy rainfall is possible about coastal parts of the Carpentaria District as Megan approaches overnight and during Monday (18 March). Heavy rainfall is currently occurring over southeastern parts of the Top End, with the heaviest falls in coastal and island locations. The heaviest falls will extend further inland in the Carpentaria forecast district as well as into parts of the Gulf Country coast in Queensland.
• Abnormally high tides are expected over remaining parts of the southern Gulf for the next few days, and will likely rise above the normal high tide at times.
