MediumAustralia2025-11-20T00:00:00Z

As per reports, the following are the updates on Tropical Cyclone Fina in Northern Australia as of Thursday (20 November):

• Tropical Cyclone Fina has intensified into a category 2 system, with sustained winds near the centre reaching 95 km/h and gusts up to 130 km/h. The system is located approximately 45 kilometres from 9.5 degrees, 132.9 degrees, about 395 kilometres northeast of Darwin and 190 kilometres north-northeast of Minjilang.
• The cyclone is currently slow-moving but is expected to turn south later today before shifting southwest towards the northern coastline of Australia’s Top End. Gale-force winds extend roughly 60 nautical miles from the centre with symmetrical distribution. Environmental conditions remain marginally favourable, with warm sea surface temperatures and established upper-level outflow offset by moderate vertical wind shear and intermittent dry air intrusion.
• Forecast guidance indicates Fina may maintain category 2 strength in the short term, with a moderate possibility of intensifying to category 3 before making landfall. The system’s projected path brings it close to the Cobourg Peninsula and Tiwi Islands from Friday (21 November), with further progression towards the Van Diemen Gulf and western Top End over the weekend.
• Gale-force winds are expected to develop across the Cobourg Peninsula between Cape Don and Warruwi from Thursday night (20 November), extending eastward to Maningrida and westward to the Tiwi Islands on Friday (21 November).
