Update on toxic gas leak in Dhanbad, Jharkhand on Friday (05 December); two dead, several hospitalised

As per reports, following are the latest updates on the toxic gas leak in the Kenduadih area of Dhanbad as of Friday (05 December):

• A total of two persons have succumbed to their injuries after being poisoned by toxic gas, while 22 people remain hospitalised as of Friday (05 December). Several more people have reported minor symptoms from inhaling poisonous gases. Over 6,000 residents of Rajput Basti, Masjid Mohalla, and Number 05 Mohalla have been affected, with many being evacuated and relocated.
• Local residents staged a major protest and blocked the Dhanbad-Ranchi Highway on Thursday (04 December), with several sit-in protests continuing on Friday (05 December) at the Kenduadih Police Station and other areas.
• Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) teams and local authorities continue to engage in operations to identify the source of the leak. They have stated that containment operations will commence as soon as the source is identified. The District Administration will continues to be on full alert.
• The BCCL has been instructed by authorities to immediately construct a tent city, which will include provisions for shelter from the cold, drinking water, food, electricity, and toilets. District authorities will relocate persons from affected areas around the BCCL mine into the shelter. Instructions have also been given to arrange for a 24-hour ambulance and doctor.
• It is indicated that the leaking toxic gases are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, both of which can be fatal to humans in case of prolonged exposure. While the leak is yet to be located, authorities are dumping soil in areas around the plant in order to reduce the concentration of gas in the air.
