As per reports, the updates on tensions in the Middle East as of Sunday (21 June) are as follows:

• On Saturday (20 June), Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing alleged violations of commitments contained in the 15 June memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the US. Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters stated that the decision was taken in response to continued Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and what Tehran described as the US failure to uphold commitments under the agreement.
• The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) separately warned vessels against approaching the waterway and stated that additional measures could be taken if Israeli military operations in Lebanon continue. Despite Iran’s announcement, US Vice President JD Vance stated that Washington had not observed evidence that the Strait of Hormuz had been effectively closed and noted that approximately 16 million barrels of oil transited the waterway on Friday (19 June).
• Pakistan announced that technical talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to resume in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday (21 June).
• An Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf arrived in Switzerland on Saturday (20 June) to discuss implementation of commitments contained in the memorandum. The delegation includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and senior officials from Iran’s security, energy, and financial sectors.
• Additionally, US Vice President JD Vance is also travelling to Switzerland to participate in the next round of discussions between Washington and Tehran.
