According to reports, the following are the updates pertaining to the stone pelting incident in Surat as of Tuesday (10 September):
• Following the stone-pelting incident at Variyavi Bazaar during Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, six minors were detained by the police. In response, a mob of around 300 people gathered at the Lalgate police station to protest the detention of their community members.
• During the protest, clashes erupted between two groups, leading to injuries among police officers and damage to a police vehicle. To manage the situation, the police deployed baton charges and fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd.
• As of now, 32 individuals have been detained, and the Surat police have filed three cases related to the incidents in Saiyedpura and Variyavi Bazaar.
• Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi denounced the stone pelters as “social offenders” and stressed the need for stringent law enforcement. He instructed the Surat police to take robust action to maintain peace and order.
• The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has condemned the stone-pelting and met with Surat police to ensure continued peace during the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities.
• The police reported that the initial stone-pelting was carried out by individuals traveling in an autorickshaw, who targeted the Ganesh pandal and damaged the idol. Minors connected to the incident were taken to the Lalgate police station.
• The individuals who allegedly threw stones at the idol have been charged under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including unlawful assembly, injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult religion, and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
