As per reports, the authorities in Baksa district suspended mobile internet services and imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 on Wednesday (15 October) after violent protests erupted during the transfer of five individuals arrested in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s death.
• Tensions were reported in Baksa after a mob started pelting stones at a convoy carrying five of the people arrested in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s death. The convoy was taking them to the Baksa District Jail on Wednesday (15 October) afternoon after a local court in Guwahati remanded them to judicial custody.
• The incident prompted police intervention and heightened security measures across the district.
• The protestors attacked police vehicles with stones, smashing their glass panes. Some journalists were also hit by stones. Three vehicles belonging to the police were torched.
• Police in Assam’s Baksa district resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the mob. When the initial attempt failed to restore order, security personnel fired tear gas shells and blank rounds to control the crowd.
• Despite resistance from protestors, the police convoy entered the Baksa District Jail premises. Protestors later attempted to breach the security cordon, resulting in scuffles with police personnel stationed at the gates.
• Law enforcement dispersed the mob using force, after which authorities reinforced security in and around the jail complex to prevent further disturbances.
