As per reports, following are the latest updates regarding students’ protest at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), as on Thursday (03 April);
• The Telangana High Court on Wednesday (02 April) directed Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy to ensure a temporary halt to the destruction or cutting of trees on the 400-acre site at Kancha Gachibowli in Serilingampally Mandal.
• The UoH Students’ Union has submitted an appeal to the Union Ministry of Education to stop the clearing activities and designate the land as a National Park and green zone.
• In response, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has demanded a factual report from the Telangana state government, invoking applicable legal frameworks including the Indian Forest Act, the Wildlife Protection Act, and the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam.
• Senior BRS leader and former IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar, along with other leaders, also submitted a formal complaint to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife)-Telangana, urging legal action against officials involved in the large-scale environmental degradation in the biodiversity-rich UoH zone.
