As per reports, following are the updates on potential US military strikes against Iran as of Friday (20 February):
• As of Thursday (19 February), publicly available satellite imagery from the European Sentinel-2 programme indicates that at least 12 US Navy vessels are present in the Middle East region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, three Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, two additional destroyers, three specialist combat support vessels, as well as two other United States Navy destroyers operating in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
• On Thursday (19 February), reportedly, Iran conducted its annual joint military drills with Russian forces as a second United States aircraft carrier moved closer to the Middle East region amid rising tensions linked to ongoing nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
• On Thursday (19 February), in a letter addressed to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani stated that while Iran does not seek tension or war and would not initiate conflict, any aggression by the US would be responded to decisively and proportionately, adding that under such circumstances all bases, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region would constitute legitimate targets within the context of Iran’s defensive response.
• On Wednesday (18 February), reports indicated that US President Donald Trump has withdrawn support for UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s proposal to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after Britain did not agree to allow its military bases to be used for potential strikes on Iran, as the White House is reportedly preparing detailed military plans for a possible attack involving the use of Diego Garcia and Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in Gloucestershire, where the US maintains heavy bomber assets in Europe.
