As per reports, on Monday (06 October), US President Donald Trump announced that he could consider invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807, a federal law that allows the president to deploy military forces on US soil to restore order during civil unrest, if deemed necessary.

• The statement followed recent orders to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to cities including Chicago, Illinois, and Portland, Oregon, despite opposition from local authorities and federal courts that blocked the deployments as unconstitutional.
• The president justified his position by citing outbreaks of violence, civil disobedience, and opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, which he described as ‘insurrection’ or ‘criminal insurrection.’
• He reportedly stated that the use of the Insurrection Act would be aimed at preventing deaths and protecting Americans, particularly in cities where he perceives ineffective local governance.
• Legal challenges have been reportedly filed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Portland officials, and city mayors, arguing that federal troop deployment violates state sovereignty, disrupts civil governance, and risks escalating violence.
• The federal judiciary has temporarily blocked troop deployments in Portland, and Illinois is pursuing a legal injunction to prevent the deployment of National Guard forces to Chicago.
