Update on political crisis in Sudan on Saturday (29 March)

Risk level: Low Country: Sudan

As per reports, the Sudanese army has announced the capture of Souq Libya, a key market in Omdurman, as part of its ongoing offensive against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday (29 March).

• Despite these gains, fighting remains intense across multiple regions, including Darfur, Kordofan, and Gezira state.
• The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with over 12 million people displaced and widespread food insecurity affecting nearly half of Sudan’s 50 million population.
• Reports indicate that the Sudanese army has evacuated hundreds of prisoners previously detained under harsh conditions by the RSF in Jebel Awliya, south of Khartoum.
• Allegations have been reported regarding foreign involvement in the conflict, with Sudan filing a case against the United Arab Emirates at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of backing the RSF in alleged genocidal acts.
