As per reports, the São Paulo Union of Clubs (Sindiclubes) issued a recommendation this week for member clubs to temporarily suspend the sale of distilled alcoholic beverages as of Tuesday (30 September).

• The precautionary measure was adopted in response to recent cases of methanol poisoning linked to adulterated beverages, which have already resulted in fatalities and hospitalizations in the state.
• Several elite clubs, including Pinheiros Sports Club, the Syrian Sports Club, Hebraica Club, Athletico Paulistano, São Paulo Club, and Ipê Club, have complied with the recommendation.
• In its official statement, Sindiclubes emphasized that the suspension is preventive, aimed at safeguarding the health of members and protecting the reputation of the institutions. The organization highlighted that the ban would remain in effect until more information is available on the source of the adulteration and safe measures are defined.
• The Public Security Secretariat reported that between Monday (29 September) and Tuesday (30 September) more than 800 bottles of alcoholic beverages were seized in São Paulo by the Citizen Protection Police Department.
• These operations were carried out after reports of adulteration involving methanol contamination. The ongoing investigations focus on identifying suppliers and distribution chains linked to the circulation of unsafe beverages.
