As per reports, following are the updates related to the ongoing unrest in Manipur, as of Wednesday (22 April):
• Normal life continues to be impacted in Manipur’s Tamenglong as a total shutdown called by the United Naga Council (UNC) across Naga-inhabited areas prevailed. The shutdown is scheduled to continue till Thursday (23 April).
• Section 163 has been imposed in Kangpokpi, banning the movement of people outside their residences from 1800 hours (local time) from Tuesday (21 April). The restrictions will remain in place until further notice. Security forces have been placed on high alert across vulnerable locations as authorities work to contain the situation and prevent further unrest.
• Tension prevailed following clashes between members of two tribal communities during the shutdown called by the Naga civil bodies. The incidents occurred in villages across Senapati district and Kangpokpi district, where bandh (shutdown) supporters reportedly clashed with residents.
• Further, in Thoubal, on Tuesday (21 April), protesters blocked key roads to obstruct the movement of the Chief Minister, who was scheduled to inaugurate the Wangjing Block Development Officer (BDO) office. Road blockades were set up along the Thoubal line in an attempt to prevent the Chief Minister from traveling to Wangjing. While the inauguration program took place under heightened security arrangements, a large number of protesters gathered near the venue. Authorities used tear gas and reportedly fired shots in the air to control the gathering. At least one protester sustained injuries during the incident.
