As per reports, the following are the updates on unrest in Manipur as of Tuesday (23 December):
• The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC), an indigenous rights advocacy group has alleged that the Bangladesh Army has committed serious human rights violations against members of the Bawm-Kuki tribe in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and has sought international intervention. They have accused Bangladeshi security forces of carrying out unlawful arrests, custodial torture and killings, claiming that the recent incidents point to a broader pattern of persecution of indigenous communities in the region. The rights body stated that the ongoing security operations have created an atmosphere of fear among Bawm-Kuki villagers.
• The Manipur Petroleum Dealers Fraternity has postponed its proposed shutdown of petrol pumps across Manipur, which was scheduled to begin from Monday (29 December), following what it described as a positive response from the state government. However, the fraternity clarified that it would continue to closely monitor the situation and assess the steps taken by the authorities to address their demands, adding that future action would depend on the government’s response.
