As per reports, the following are the latest situational updates on the Manipur unrest, as of Tuesday (22 April):
• A violent clash broke out between a mob and security forces in Thoubal district on Monday morning (21 April).The incident occurred at Khangabok Arongthong Makhong locality at 1000 hours after the mob destroyed a house, shop, and foundation pillar allegedly built by an individual on a disputed land.
• Police later used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. No injury was reported and the situation is now under control.
• In an intensified crackdown on insurgent groups, Manipur police have arrested militants affiliated with the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) and rescued four individuals, including three women, in the last 24 hours as on Monday (21 April).
• The arrests bring the total number of extremists detained over the past 48 hours to 20, with police recovering a significant cache of arms and ammunition across various districts.
• The Government of Manipur is to observe Khongjom Day at the Khongjom War Memorial, Khebaching, Thoubal on Wednesday (23 April). The event will be graced by Governor Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the Chief Guest, with Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh presiding.
• The state government has urged citizens to participate in the event. The Transport Department has arranged special buses for the public from key points across Imphal, including MST Complex, Koirengei, Chingmeirong, Porompat, Tera Bazar, Ram Lal Paul Hr. Secondary School, and Directorate of Art & Culture. All buses will depart at 0630 hours.
• Additionally, a delegation representing internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Churachandpur district submitted a memorandum to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Secretary Prasant Kumar Singh, outlining urgent welfare and rehabilitation measures needed for displaced families. The Churachandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC), an umbrella organisation comprising five civil society groups, presented four key demands following a meeting held at Mangolnganbi College, Ningthoukhong on 13 April.
