As per reports, the following are the latest situational updates on the Manipur unrest, as of Tuesday (17 June):
• A meeting between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials and Kuki rebel groups on Monday (16 June) decided to close at least seven camps situated closer to Meitei-dominated areas in Manipur. The meeting held in New Delhi, however, remained short of reaching an agreement on resumption of communication on two national highways passing through Kuki areas and extension of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements with the rebel groups.
• Kuki organisation in Manipur stated that another meeting will take place after two weeks to further discuss on the remaining issues. The decision for closure of designated camps situated close to the Meitei-dominated areas was reached based on recommendations of the central security forces as well as concerns expressed by Meitei organisations.
• Member of Parliament (MP) Bimol Akoijam and Khundrakpam Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Thokchom Lokeshwar have drawn attention to the recent tensions in Pukhao Leitanpokpi, urging immediate intervention to ensure peace and protect farmers’ rights. The two leaders met the Governor on Monday evening (16 June) and apprised him of the situation.
• Five members of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a civilian and the assault on two police personnel, as stated on Monday (16 June). It is part of an ongoing crackdown in Manipur.
• Three of the arrested persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded in seven-day police custody. Police stated others involved in the case were being traced.
