As per reports, the latest situational updates in Manipur as of Monday (30 September) are as follows:
• The Manipur government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for another six months, with effect from Tuesday (01 October) in the state, excluding areas under the jurisdiction of 19 police stations, including Imphal, Bishnupur, Jiriibam and Lamphel.
• The Manipur government has rushed Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh to the Kangpokpi district to negotiate the release of two Meitei youth held hostage allegedly by Kuki militants. A video featuring the two abductees had surfaced on social media on Sunday morning (29 September) and one of them was heard appealing to the DGP to save their lives by fulfilling the demands of their captors.
• According to media reports, two key demands are the release of Mark T Haokip, who is a Kuki-Zo tribal, and the shifting of 15 Kuki prisoners from Imphal’s Sajiwa jail to Churachandpur jail.
• In a series of successful joint operations in the hill and valley areas, Indian Army, Assam Rifles in close coordination with Manipur Police and other security forces in the previous week have recovered 23 weapons, 52.5 Kgs of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), ammunition and warlike stores from various districts across the state.
• On 25 and 27 September, an intelligence based joint operation launched by Assam Rifles and Manipur Police in the general areas of Tekcham Maning and Phainom Village Pine Forest Plantation in Thoubal District resulted in recovery of one 7.62 mm Self Loading Rifle (SLR), two 9 mm carbines, one 9 mm pistol, one 0.32 mm pistol, grenades ammunition and war like stores. A major tragedy was averted when Assam Rifles and Manipur Police detected and neutralized 10 Kgs of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) placed along State Highway 18 in Saram, Thoubal District.
• In Kangpokpi district, an intelligence-based operation was launched by Assam Rifles and Manipur Police on Friday (27 September) in general area of Loiching Ridge. Assam Rifles also conducted another joint search operation in the Aigejang Ridge line area in the same district on Saturday (28 September).
• Security operations were also launched in Churachandpur, Songdoi, Imphal East and Bishnupur.
