As per reports, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced he would submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (08 July) morning, in accordance with his ‘principles.’ It is currently unclear who will take over as the prime minister, with no party securing an absolute majority.

• This means Emmanuel Macron faces the prospect of having to appoint a figure from the left-wing coalition, in an arrangement known as a ‘cohabitation.’ However, figures in his party have repeatedly stated that they would not collaborate with groups like France Unbowed, because they are ‘just as extreme’ — and therefore ‘as unfit to govern’ — as the National Rally (RN).
• In Paris, crowds gathered in the streets as the French election results were being announced on Sunday (07 July). Thousands celebrated in Place de la République. However, tear gas was deployed and protesters were arrested amid incidents of Molotov cocktails and smoke bombs being used.
