As per reports, Air France Flight AF378, operating the Paris-Detroit route, was diverted to Montréal–Trudeau International Airport in Canada on Wednesday (20 May) after a passenger from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was reportedly permitted to board despite Ebola-related US entry restrictions.
According to United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the passenger should not have boarded the aircraft due to recently implemented entry restrictions due to Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa. As a result, the flight was prohibited from landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and was instead redirected to Montréal, where authorities removed the passenger before permitting the aircraft to continue onward to Detroit.
• The flight reportedly departed Paris at approximately 1600 hours local time (1400 hours UTC) on Wednesday (20 May). Flight tracking information indicated that the aircraft landed in Montréal at approximately 1715 hours local time (2115 hours UTC) on Wednesday (20 May).
• The aircraft remained on the ground for less than one hour while the passenger was removed, and later continued to Detroit, where it landed at approximately 2018 hours local time on Wednesday (20 May) (0018 hours UTC on 21 May).
• Air France confirmed that the diversion was conducted at the request of US authorities and stated that, under newly implemented regulations, passengers arriving from certain countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, may only enter the United States through Washington Dulles International Airport.
• The airline additionally stated that there was no medical emergency onboard the aircraft and that airlines are required to comply with the entry requirements of the countries they serve.
