As per reports, a major explosion followed by several smaller blasts occurred at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory on Triq il-Qadi in Salina at approximately 0630 hours local time (0430 hours UTC) on Monday (01 June).
• The explosion generated a large smoke plume visible across multiple parts of Malta and was reportedly felt in central and northern areas of the island.
• Two men were hospitalised with minor injuries and shock after the incident.
• Large stones and debris were reportedly thrown onto Triq is-Salini, causing damage to vehicles and creating hazardous driving conditions.
• Residents in surrounding areas were evacuated while emergency services responded to the incident and smaller secondary explosions continued after the initial blast.
• Police, Civil Protection Department personnel, Armed Forces of Malta units, and medical responders remain deployed at the site to secure the affected area, support emergency operations, and ensure public safety while investigations and damage assessments continue.
