As per reports, the following are the latest updates on the explosion reported at the fireworks factory near Virudhunagar as of Monday (20 April):
• At least 23 workers have been killed and several others injured in the incident at a private firecracker manufacturing unit, Vanaja Fireworks, located in Kattanarpatti near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. The blast occurred while around 30 workers were present in one section of the facility, with over 100 workers reportedly engaged across the complex.
• According to officials, the explosion is believed to have originated in the front veranda area, where workers were handling raw materials and carrying out finishing processes. During ongoing rescue operations, a secondary explosion triggered panic at the site, leaving fire service personnel injured.
• State Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran confirmed the death toll and stated that six injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at the District Government Hospital, while senior state leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, and Chief Minister, have expressed condolences.
• Preliminary findings reportedly indicate that the factory was licensed by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). In response, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and assess any safety violations.
• Additionally, a case has been registered at the Vachakarapatti Police Station, and officials have indicated that the unit’s license will be cancelled if violations are confirmed.
