As per reports, the following are the updates for escalations in Syria as of Tuesday (10 December):
• A series of explosions were reported near Qamishli Airport in northeastern Syria, following Israeli airstrikes on military bases across the country on Monday (09 December). These strikes were reported to have targeted significant military infrastructure linked to the Syrian government, including the Qamishli air base, the Him Sinsar base in Homs province, and Aqraba airport southwest of Damascus.
• The airstrikes were reportedly carried out by Israeli fighter jets, also hit several other military facilities, such as defense factories and electronic warfare sites in Hama and Aleppo.
• Reports from Syrian sources claimed that dozens of aircraft and helicopters had been damaged in the raids, heightening the threat to both military personnel and civilians in the affected areas on Monday (09 December).
• Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly fled the country, effectively ending his decades-long regime. Reports indicate that Assad has sought asylum in Moscow on humanitarian grounds as of Tuesday (10 December).
• The situation is further compounded by the growing number of families gatherings near the Saydnaya prison, searching for their family members amid claims of secret prisons and mass executions. Additionally, the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) conducted a search on Monday (09 December) for hidden cells within the prison, but no new evidence was found.
• Lebanon has reportedly closed all but one border crossing with Syria, and Jordan has taken similar measures, restricting movement across their shared border. These measures indicate a growing concern about spillover effects from the Syrian conflict, as both Lebanon and Jordan brace for the influx of refugees and the potential for military escalation.
