Update on disruptions due to severe storms reported across Kansas City as of Tuesday (19 May)

As per reports, severe thunderstorms that moved through the Kansas City metropolitan area on Monday (18 May) continued to affect utility services and transportation operations as of Tuesday (19 May), following widespread power outages, damaging winds, tornado activity, and localized flooding across parts of Missouri and Kansas.

According to utility provider Evergy, approximately 17,000 customers remained without electricity at approximately 0400 hours local time (0900 hours UTC) on Tuesday (19 May).

• Significant outages were previously reported across Jackson County, Missouri, Johnson County, Kansas, and Wyandotte County, Kansas.
• The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed tornado activity near Rayville, Missouri, on Monday night, while severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts ranging between 58 and 84 miles per hour across parts of Missouri and Kansas.
• Localized flooding and storm-related road disruption were also reported in parts of Missouri, including temporary road closures affecting Route C in Nodaway and Atchison counties on Monday (18 May).
• Transport disruption continued into Tuesday (19 May) after Amtrak announced the cancellation of the Missouri River Runner rail service between Kansas City and St. Louis because of storm-related impacts. Replacement bus transportation was arranged for affected passengers.
• As of 0514 hours local time (1014 hours UTC) on Tuesday (19 May), power outages continue and the estimated restoration timeline is not known due to continued storm activity.
