The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the following weather updates about the cyclonic storm formation ‘Shakhti’ over the Arabian Sea, as of Tuesday (07 October):
• The Deep Depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea has moved nearly south-southeastwards at a speed of 8 kmph during the past six hours.
• The system was located approximately:
230 km southeast of Masirah (Oman)
360 km south of Ras Al Hadd (Oman)
930 km east-northeast of Al-Ghaidah (Yemen)
960 km southwest of Karachi (Pakistan)
980 km west-southwest of Dwarka (India)
1000 km west-southwest of Naliya (India)
• The system is expected to move slowly east-southeastwards over the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea and weaken into a depression within the next six hours.
• The estimated central pressure of the system is 1000 hPa.
• The maximum sustained wind speed is about 25 knots, gusting up to 30 knots.
• Squally winds with speeds reaching 50–60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, are prevailing over the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea.
• Wind speeds are likely to gradually decrease to 45–55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, by 0600 UTC on Tuesday (07 October) and continue to weaken thereafter.
• Sea conditions are likely to remain very rough to rough over the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea until 0600 UTC on Tuesday (07 October).
• Fishermen are advised not to venture into the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea until Tuesday (07 October), due to rough sea conditions and strong winds.
