Update on curfew in Bara district – Friday (21 November)

As per reports, update on curfew in Bara district of Nepal, as of Friday (21 November), is as follows:

• Tension had escalated in Simara Chowk in Bara district on Thursday (20 November), as youths accused the police of failing to arrest individuals named in their complaint over Wednesday’s (19 November) clashes. Resultantly, the Bara District Administration had imposed a curfew in the region till 2000 hours (local time) on Thursday (20 November).
• Despite the prohibitory order, the demonstrators gathered in the streets and clashes with the police was reported. Authorities fired six tear gas canisters and two rounds of aerial fire after protesters defied the curfew and continued advancing, on Thursday (20 November).
• Protesters also pelted stones at security forces, injuring six police personnel, while four youth protesters were also reported injured.
• In a separate incident, the youth demonstrators set fire to the police beat in Simara Bazaar, and items from the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) office were also removed and torched by protesters, accusing police of hesitating to arrest UML cadres involved in earlier clashes.
