According to reports, following are the latest updates, as of Saturday (02 May), related to the cruise-boat collapse in the Narmada River near Khamariya Island in Jabalpur on Thursday (30 April);
• Authorities have confirmed that the death toll has risen to nine following the recovery of several bodies from the submerged vessel over the past twenty-four hours. The search operations at Bargi Dam have entered a critical phase as NDRF and Army divers focus on recovering the final four individuals still missing. Officials said 28 people have been rescued so far.
• Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has initiated strict legal action by terminating the cruise pilot and suspending senior tourism officials for gross negligence regarding safety protocols. All recreational boating activities at the reservoir remain strictly suspended while a specialized technical team conducts a comprehensive audit of the vessel’s structural integrity.
• Preliminary investigations suggest the accident was exacerbated by the crew’s failure to distribute life jackets before the sudden storm caused the overcrowded boat to capsize. Further investigations are underway.
