As per reports, as of Tuesday (02 June), controlled water evacuation operations are ongoing at the Karakaya Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HES) in the Çüngüş District of Diyarbakır due to rising water levels caused by heavy seasonal rainfall.

Affected areas include Çüngüş District, Diyarbakır, Karakaya Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant, Malatya Province, Elazığ Province,

• Reports indicate that the reservoir volume has reached approximately 9.5 billion cubic metres following an intense winter and spring precipitation scenario, leading authorities to open up to six spillway gates to mitigate potential flood risks.
• Reports suggest that the evacuation process from the 173-metre-high dam structure is being executed in a staggered manner, with five gates currently active, and the discharge volume is anticipated to be gradually reduced over the coming days as water levels decrease.
• Regional authorities announce no fixed or definitive expiration date for the water evacuation. The discharge volume is expected to be gradually scaled back in the coming days, only as the reservoir’s water levels begin to decrease to safe thresholds.
