As per reports, the following are the latest updates regarding the ammonia gas leak reported in Periyapalayam, Thiruvallur as of Tuesday (23 June):
• National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, calling for a detailed report on the matter within a perios of two weeks. It also ordered the state government to form a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
• The death toll rose to eight after six additional affected workers succumbed to their injuries on Monday (22 June). All eight fatalities were women, including seven workers from Odisha and one from Assam.
• Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare and Skill Development Minister J. Mohamed Parvez announced on Monday (22 June) that Chief Minister Vijay has directed authorities to undertake a statewide review of hazardous industries following the fatal ammonia gas leak.
