Update on air-travel measures across India amidst Middle-East tensions – Monday (20 April)

MediumIndia2026-04-20T00:00:00Z

According to reports, as of Monday (20 April), air-travel operations between India and the Middle East continue under a capacity-constrained and externally regulated operating phase, with the most significant development being the commencement of Dubai’s previously announced flight restrictions for foreign carriers, now creating live operational pressure on India–UAE connectivity.

• Dubai’s one round-trip-per-day cap per foreign airline (20 April to 31 May) has become effective from Monday (20 April), shifting earlier planning constraints into active operational impact and reducing available frequency for affected carriers.
• Indian airlines, including IndiGo and Air India Express, are expected to continue operating curtailed Dubai schedules, with limited slots likely being prioritised on high-demand trunk routes such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, and other major gateways.
• Connectivity from secondary Indian cities to Dubai is likely to remain reduced, as carriers consolidate available capacity toward metro routes and commercially stronger sectors.
• Air India and Air India Express continue to maintain a restricted West Asia network, with portions of UAE connectivity likely operating through controlled deployment rather than broad restoration of standard schedules.
• Compared to UAE sectors, Saudi Arabia- and Oman-linked routes continue to show comparative operational stability, with ongoing services to Jeddah and Muscat from multiple Indian cities.
• Qatar Airways continues operating under a managed rebuild framework via Doha, maintaining gradual schedule restoration and flexible passenger policies, supporting Doha as an alternate transit option.
• Airports such as Mangaluru, Vijayawada, Tiruchirappalli, Kannur, and Kozhikode are likely to continue facing selective or reduced Gulf connectivity compared to larger hubs.
• Broader airline operations continue to be influenced by fuel-cost pressure, slot scarcity, and route optimisation measures, limiting the pace of wider network restoration.
