As per a seven-day cyclone forecast issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, two tropical lows are expected, one forming off the coast of Western Australia and the Northern Territory (NT), and another off the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria, both with the potential of forming into tropical cyclones.
• The first tropical low could form near the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf to the west of Darwin on Friday (12 January) and if it remains over water, it could develop into a tropical cyclone. This system should move southwards over the weekend with a medium chance of developing into a cyclone from Saturday (13 January). There is high uncertainty on its future movement early next week (15- 16 January), with the low either moving further inland over NT or moving southwest towards the west Kimberley coast.
• Another tropical low could form in the Gulf of Carpentaria from Friday (12 January) or Saturday (13 January). If this system forms and remains over water, there is a low chance of it developing into a tropical cyclone from Sunday (14 January). Over the weekend (13-14 January) and next week, it could move east or south taking it over land or across Cape Yorke and into the Coral Sea.
• The other system is a potential tropical low that could form near the Cocos Islands, a remote territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean, over the weekend (13-14 January).
