As per reports, the Gerencia Regional de Salud (Geresa – Regional Health Authority) of Lambayeque reported on Wednesday (20 May) that two suspected measles cases in children under five years of age are currently under evaluation, pending laboratory confirmation from the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS – National Health Institute).
• The two suspected cases involve children from the districts of Chiclayo, José Leonardo Ortiz, and La Victoria. Of nine suspected cases reported during the current surveillance period, seven have already been discarded following serological testing.
• Reports indicate that Geresa has activated epidemiological surveillance brigades to conduct containment operations in the affected zones, verify the vaccination status of the population, and conduct active searches for individuals who have not completed their immunisation schedules, prioritising children up to ten years of age.
• The Immunisations Coordinator of Geresa, José Antonio Enríquez Salazar, confirmed that vaccination coverage in the region remains critically low, with only 23 percent of one-year-old children vaccinated against the expected target of 33 percent, and only 17 percent of children under five having completed their full 18-dose immunisation schedule.
• Authorities have advised the public to recognise symptoms of measles, including fever, general malaise, and skin rashes beginning on the face and spreading to the chest, and to seek immediate medical attention to avoid complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis.
