As per reports, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Unal Ustel publicly rebuked the Greek Cypriot administration following its formal complaint to the United Nations regarding a planned natural gas pipeline connecting the TRNC and Türkiye on Sunday (23 August).

• Maria Michael, the UN representative for the Greek Cypriot administration, sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres describing the pipeline project as “illegal” and “null and void.” The Greek Cypriot administration argued that the project violates their maritime rights and was initiated without their consent.
• The diplomatic friction centers on a memorandum of understanding signed on 10 July between the TRNC and Türkiye. The project envisions a 101-kilometer (63-mile) bi-directional undersea pipeline connecting Anamur on Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast with Teknecik in the TRNC, allowing natural gas to flow between the two territories.
• Prime Minister Ustel strongly dismissed the UN complaint, stating that the Greek Cypriot administration has no authority to dictate the TRNC’s energy security, future development, or cooperation with Türkiye. He reaffirmed that the TRNC will proceed with the pipeline to ensure its energy independence.
