As per reports, on New Year’s Eve, i.e., Tuesday (31 December) significant disruptions are expected in and around Times Square due to the annual New Year’s Eve celebration and is expected to continue until early hours of Wednesday (01 January).
• Key street closures will take place in Times Square, including West 42nd to West 49th Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway, West 43rd to West 48th Street between Sixth and Eighth avenues, West 37th to West 57th Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway, and West 37th to West 56th Street between Sixth and Eighth avenues. These closures will affect both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, with official viewing areas opening at 1500 hours (local time) on Tuesday (31 December) and checkpoints for spectators located at West 49th, 52nd, and 56th streets from both Sixth and Eighth avenues.
• In addition to these closures, more streets will be shut down to allow for police movement, urging spectators to rely on public transportation. Subway and bus services will operate with some adjustments. Subways will run on a weekday schedule with increased service on lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, C, D, G, L, N, Q, R, and S.
• Notably, the A train will operate express until 0245 hours (local time) on Wednesday (01 January). Some subway stations, such as Times Sq-42 St, 42 St-Bryant Park, and 59 St-Columbus Circle, may have closed exits, with some train stations not stopping at certain Midtown locations, including Uptown 1 trains not stopping at 50 St. until 1215 hours (local time) on Wednesday (01 January), and N, Q, R trains skipping 49 St. in either direction during the same period. On New Year’s Day, subways and buses will run on a Sunday schedule. The MTA is providing additional services on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) with 11 extra trains for passengers heading into the city for New Year’s Eve celebrations and 12 additional trains to accommodate return trips from the city on New Year’s Day.
• Extra service will also be provided for those travelling to and from Elmont-UBS Arena for the Billy Joel concert on New Year’s Eve. Metro-North will follow a regular weekday schedule with additional late-evening and post-midnight services for New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s morning. On New Year’s Day, Metro-North will run hourly service and extra trains on the New Haven Line, with weekend schedules for other lines. MTA Bridges and Tunnels will experience temporary daytime road closures, ending at 1300 hours (local time) on Thursday (02 January 2025). However, traffic disruptions are expected to continue due to roadwork, especially during the morning rush hour on Thursday (02 January) when soft lane closures may be implemented.
