Coastally trapped Kelvin wave expected to raise coastal sea levels across California in early October

Risk level: Low Country: United States

As per reports, a coastally trapped Kelvin wave currently moving north along the Pacific coast of Mexico is expected to reach Southern California in early October and raise coastal sea levels by approximately six to 12 inches.

• Reports indicate that the wave is expected to reach the Los Angeles area in early October before continuing north towards the San Francisco Bay Area, where water levels could rise by nearly one foot.
• The elevated sea levels could persist for approximately three to six months and may increase coastal inundation and erosion risks when combined with high tides, large swells or coastal storms.
• Recent coastal erosion linked to Hurricane Marie has reduced beach sand in areas including Long Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and Malibu, potentially reducing the natural buffer protecting roads, buildings and other infrastructure.
