As per reports, traffic movement on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway NH-44 was suspended on Monday (26 January) due to severe icy conditions. A senior traffic police official stated that the suspension was imposed after multiple vehicles skidded and had near-accidents on the road surface.

Details are as follows:

• The situation was particularly observed along the high-altitude stretch between the Banihal and Ramban sectors.
• Traffic was halted at designated holding points, including Chanderkote, Ramban, and Jakhani, after the road surface developed heavy frost and ice formation.
• Restoration work is ongoing and remains dependent on prevailing weather conditions. Stranded vehicles are being provided necessary assistance, and traffic will be permitted only after a safety assessment confirms road usability.
• Passengers and light motor vehicle operators are advised to prefer travel on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway during daytime hours.
• Night travel is advised to be avoided due to the risk of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.
• Frost formation between Nachlana and the NAVYUG Tunnel, caused by recent snow accumulation, may further lead to slippery road conditions. Commuters are advised to follow lane discipline, as overtaking and wrong-lane driving may lead to congestion.
• Subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, light motor vehicles, passenger vehicles, private cars, and heavy motor vehicles carrying goods may be allowed from both Jammu towards Srinagar and Srinagar towards Jammu, subject to coordination between TCU Jammu, TCU Srinagar, and TCU Ramban.
• Security Forces convoy movement will also be permitted from both sides only after confirmation of road status from TCU Ramban.
• The Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag road on NH-244 remains closed due to fresh snow accumulation. The Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri road remains closed due to snow accumulation. The Mughal Road also remains closed for vehicular movement due to fresh snow accumulation.
