As per reports, from 0600 hours (local time) on Wednesday (28 May) until 0600 hours (local time) on Friday (30 May) taxi services in Athens will be completely suspended due to a strike organized by the Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA).
• The strike escalates ongoing tensions between taxi drivers and the Alternate Minister of Transport, Costas Kyranakis, who has refused to engage in direct dialogue with the union’s leadership.
• Drivers oppose several recent government decisions, including the cancellation of the measure allowing loaded taxis to use special traffic lanes and the proposed introduction of the Swedish model for urban transport.
• Taxi drivers have put forward multiple demands including the lifting of the requirement that new taxis registered from 2026 must be zero-emission vehicles, stricter regulations against illegal ride-hailing services, clearer distinctions between taxi services and rental cars with drivers, improved digital contract platforms, and financial relief such as tax exemptions, VAT reductions, and fare increases linked to minimum wage adjustments.
• The union also calls for stronger penalties against illegal taxi operations and the modernization of permits and licensing processes.
• To mitigate transport disruptions, bus and metro services to and from Athens Airport will be reinforced during the strike period. Airport express bus lines (X95, X96, X93, X97) will increase frequency, and additional metro trains will operate between Doukissis Plakentias and the Airport.
