As per reports, the Portuguese government has announced the immediate suspension of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU citizens at Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon) for a period of three months on Tuesday (30 December).

• This decision follows months of severe congestion and prolonged queues in the arrivals area for passengers arriving from outside the Schengen Area, attributed to operational challenges linked to the rollout of the EU’s new EES.
• According to the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), the suspension aims to reinforce contingency measures initially defined in September, with the objective of reducing arrival processing times to levels already achieved in the departures area. To support this measure, the government has ordered an immediate reinforcement of GNR (National Republican Guard) personnel, deploying officers with certified border control training.
• Additionally, authorities confirmed that the capacity of electronic and physical border control equipment may be increased by approximately 30 percent, reaching the maximum supported by the airport’s current infrastructure.
