Surge in political violence across Bangladesh ahead of National Elections – Tuesday (03 February)

As per reports, ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for Thursday (12 February), Bangladesh has recorded a major surge in political violence.

Following are the details:

• Independent human rights organisations have alleged that they have recorded four deaths, 414 injuries, and 51 incidents of clashes since campaigning began on 21 January 2026.
• The reported fatalities include – a civilian killed due to a political rivalry in Dhobaura, Mymensingh; the killing of Jamaat-e-Islami secretary Rezaul Karim by a mob in Sherpur’s Sribardi ‘upazila’ (sub-division); the killing of Mohammed Kamal Uddin, former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) union president from Katiadi, Kishoreganj-2; and the killing of Swechchhasebak Dal leader Azahar in Rupganj, Narayanganj.
• Police Headquarters data indicates that 144 violent incidents took place nationwide between 12 December 2025 and 26 January 2026, including 55 clashes, 11 cases of intimidation, six attacks on candidates, two incidents involving illegal weapons, 17 obstructions to campaign activities, eight attacks and arson targeting election offices, and 24 other incidents linked to various causes.
• Meanwhile, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing said that 274 election-related violent incidents had been recorded from 12 December 2025 to 01 February 2026, leading to at least five deaths. Of the 274 incidents, 16 involved intimidation or aggressive behavior, 15 attacks on candidates, five murders, 89 clashes among rival candidate supporters, three incidents involving illegal weapons, nine cases of threats and coercion, 29 obstructions in campaigning, 20 attacks/vandalism/arson targeting election offices, 17 blockades or protests, and 70 incidents of other types.
