As per reports, a stampede occurred at dawn on Tuesday (25 March) at an ancient mosque in the Awamiya district of Luxor Governorate, Egypt, during Tahajjud prayers, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
• Panic ensued when worshippers, particularly women, noticed smoke rising and mistakenly believed there was a fire inside the mosque. In their attempt to escape, a stampede occurred.
• An 8-year-old girl lost her life, and eight individuals sustained injuries, including suffocation and minor wounds. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
• Authorities determined that the smoke was caused by burning waste in an adjacent courtyard, and there was no actual fire inside the mosque. The Public Prosecution Office has launched an investigation and initiated legal proceedings.
