Stampede reported at TVK rally in Veluswamypuram on Saturday (27 September)

As per reports, a political campaign rally organised by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), in Veluswamypuram, Karur, turned into a tragedy on Saturday (27 September).

• A sudden power outage at the venue triggered panic among the tightly packed crowd, leading to a surge and stampede-like situation.
• As the event progressed, several attendees reportedly fainted due to the rush and were rushed to Karur Medical College Hospital and nearby private hospitals.
• Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian confirmed the death toll at 29, with at least 50 more people currently under treatment, some in critical condition.
• The Karur Superintendent of Police led immediate response operations, while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin ordered emergency measures.
• State ministers Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Ma Subramanian, along with Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvatham, were dispatched to oversee relief and coordinate with law enforcement.
