As per reports, Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed a revised version of the national constitution on Sunday (08 March) following approval by both chambers of the Federal Parliament on 04 March.
• The signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, marking the completion of a constitutional review process that has continued since the adoption of the provisional constitution in 2012.
• The constitution functions as Somalia’s principal legal framework defining the structure of government, distribution of authority between federal and regional administrations, and protection of citizens’ rights.
• President Mohamud stated that the signing concludes a lengthy constitutional review process aimed at strengthening governance institutions and establishing a more structured democratic framework.
• Somalia has operated under a provisional constitution since 2012, while lawmakers and political leaders discussed amendments intended to stabilise the country’s political system.
• Government officials indicated that the revised constitutional framework supports strengthening state institutions and reinforcing legal protections for citizens.
• Opposition leaders and political analysts expressed concerns that elements of the revised constitutional framework may affect the electoral process ahead of the scheduled presidential term conclusion on 15 May.
• Authorities in the federal member states of Puntland and Jubbaland rejected the constitutional amendments, stating that the process lacked sufficient consultation with regional administrations.
• Political observers indicated that discussions between the federal government, regional administrations, and opposition leaders continue regarding the implementation of the revised constitutional framework following the signing.
