As per reports, wildfires continued to burn across British Columbia with more than 20,000 people evacuated from communities around Okanagan Lake as of Sunday (09 August).

• The Bald Range wildfire, first reported on Friday (07 August) evening, had rapidly expanded across the Summerland and Peachland areas, destroying homes and prompting large-scale evacuations.
• Summerland, which has a population of approximately 12,000, was ordered to evacuate, while around 8,000 residents in and around Peachland were also evacuated. The Regional District of Central Okanagan, Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, Snpink’tn Indian Band, Summerland and Peachland issued evacuation orders, with evacuation alerts in some other areas. Hundreds of residents from care facilities, including senior housing, were also being relocated.
• The Bald Range wildfire expanded to more than 136 square kilometres and advanced roughly 14 kilometres towards Okanagan Lake within hours. Officials reported that the fire became sufficiently intense to generate its own weather system and lightning. More than 50 people were rescued by 18 firefighting aircraft, while some residents became trapped as conditions changed rapidly.
• The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating a possible wildfire-related death near Summerland, although hazardous conditions have prevented authorities from confirming the fatality. The full extent of structural damage also remains unclear, although significant property and home losses have been reported.
• Highway 97, a major regional route, was closed between Peachland and Penticton as evacuation traffic increased.
