Situational update on vehicle collision injuring Chicago police near West Side on Sunday (24 May)

As per reports, a public safety incident occurred on the Near West Side of Chicago, Illinois, during the early hours of Sunday (24 May).

• At approximately 0320 hours local time (0820 hours UTC), five officers from the Chicago Police Department were injured after a vehicle drove into officers who were dispersing a large crowd near the 1200 block of South Loomis Street.
• According to authorities, officers were conducting crowd management operations related to a large late-night gathering described by officials as either a ‘teen takeover’ or an after-prom gathering that escalated in size.
• During the operation, a blue sedan reportedly travelled westbound in an eastbound lane before striking the officers on foot. The vehicle subsequently mounted a curb and collided with a police vehicle, a fence, and a utility pole before stopping.
• The driver, identified by police as an 18-year-old male, was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities stated that a weapon was recovered from the vehicle. Charges against the individual remained pending at the time of reporting. No additional civilian injuries were reported.
• All five injured officers were transported to nearby hospitals and were reported to be in fair condition. Authorities indicated that the injuries were non-life-threatening.
• Local officials, including representatives from the City of Chicago, referenced broader concerns related to unmanaged youth gatherings, public order management, and overnight crowd control in densely populated urban areas.
