Situational update on shooting incident reported at Teotihuacan on Monday (20 April)

As per reports, a serious security incident occurred at the Teotihuacán complex, located near Mexico City, where an armed individual opened fire on tourists gathered at the Pyramid of the Moon on Monday (20 April).

• The incident took place shortly after 1130 hours local time (1730 hours UTC) when dozens of visitors were present at the site.
• The attacker, positioned on top of the pyramid, discharged a firearm toward tourists, causing panic and attempts to flee.
• According to authorities, one Canadian tourist was killed, and six other individuals were injured, including tourists of Colombian, Russian, and Canadian nationalities.
• Four individuals sustained gunshot wounds, while two others were injured due to falls.
• Emergency responders, including local police and a National Guard unit, arrived promptly and transported the injured to hospitals for treatment. The attacker later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Security officials recovered a firearm, ammunition, and a knife at the scene.
• The incident is under investigation, with national authorities, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, confirming coordination with international representatives such as the Canadian government.
